Four Pillars of the Catholic Faith
(A Short Summary of the Theology Geek's Teaching)

  • -  Profession of Faith
  • -  The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (Liturgy and Sacraments)
  • -  Life in Christ (Morality and Virtue)
  • -  Christian Prayer
The Four Pillars of the Faith are the structure which was used in writing the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Catechism is one of the greatest gifts the Church has given us in recent hsitory. This gem not only gives us a universal guide to know what the Church truly teaches, it also is an outline for our own life as disciples:

  • The "Profession of Faith" is what God reveals to us about himself.
  • "Liturgy and Sacraments" are the ordinary ways in which God imparts his life (grace) to us.
  • Our "Life in Christ" is how we live out these truths and this grace which God has gifted us with.
  • "Christian Prayer" is our turning back to God to thankhim, to praise him, and to bring our needs to him.
This process in an unending cycle of a disciple of Christ.

As both Catechists and Disciples we need to become more familiar with these Four Marks of the Church and the absolute best way do do this is to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We do ot need to read it from cover to cover. I recommend onw of two methods:
  1. Use the index to find a topic you are interested in and read everything the Catechism says about that topic. Then choose another topic and do the same.                                   - OR -
  2. Read the fourth section of the Catechism on "Christian Prayer" first. It is absolutely beautiful to read and you will both grow in your own spiritual life and become more familiar and comfortable with the Catechism. This will help you to want to read the rest of the Catechism.
